Mining activities at the Gchine salt plug, located near Bandar Abbas, are being carried out in four blocks in near-surface deposits that are open-pit mined. In its Additional Protocol declarations of May 2004 to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran provided information to the Agency on the location, operational status, and estimated annual production capacity of the Gchine mine and associated mill. The IAEA confirmed the declared status of the mining site after carrying out complementary access in July 2004. According to the IAEA, the Gchine mine contains low but variable grade uranium ore. The estimated production design capacity for the mine is 21 tonnes of uranium per year.
